In 2011, Lights and Shadows (Wide), was part of Collected for Salzburg, an exhibition at Salzburg Museum, Austria. The museum was showcasing numerous works it acquired during the previous decade.

The light conditions in the exhibition rooms were–although artificial–superb. The painting lit up with a cool white while subtle reds, greens and blues were bleeding through resulting in a vibrating “full spectrum” appearance. With a light source from the top, the rugged surface threw delicate shadows, emphasizing the expressive nature of the painting.

As other paintings from the Lights and Shadows series, this piece was painted distinctly to blend with its surroundings to stimulate viewers’ visual sensibilities. Although its appearance did not shift over the course of the day as it would in daylight conditions, I was delighted about how this seemingly monochromatic piece displayed a wide color spectrum to unsuspecting viewers.
